Come to Create a Calm Down Corner for Toddlers

Italiano

Toddlers feel emotions as intensely as adults but have none of the tools to manage them. A calm down corner is a designated space for feeling feelings safely. It is not timeout or punishment.

Setup

Quiet corner away from screens. Floor cushion or beanbag. Soft blanket or stuffed animal. Sensory items: glitter jar, stress balls, fidget toys. Feelings chart with emotion faces. A few books about feelings. Keep it to 3 to 5 items.

Teaching Your Child

Introduce during a calm moment, not a meltdown. Show each item. Practice going together when nothing is wrong. When upset, guide gently: You seem frustrated. Let us go take some deep breaths. Never force them. Stay nearby if wanted.

Age-Appropriate Strategies

18 months to 2 years: deep pressure, glitter jar, soft music. 2 to 3 years: deep breathing, squeezing stress balls, naming the emotion. 3 to 4 years: counting to ten, feelings chart, telling a stuffed animal how they feel.

What to Avoid

Do not use as punishment. Do not force them to stay. Do not lecture while they are there. Do not dismiss their feelings.
