Starting solid foods is an exciting milestone. Most babies are ready around six months of age, though some show signs of readiness a few weeks earlier or later.

Signs of Readiness

The baby can sit upright with minimal support. They show interest in food when others are eating. They can bring objects to their mouth. The tongue-thrust reflex (pushing food out with the tongue) has diminished. All four signs should be present before starting.

First Foods

Single-ingredient purees are the traditional starting point. Sweet potato, avocado, banana, and iron-fortified infant cereal are common first choices. Offer one new food every three to five days to watch for allergic reactions.

Baby-led weaning is an alternative approach where babies feed themselves soft finger foods from the start. Steamed vegetable sticks, ripe banana strips, and soft cooked pasta shapes are typical offerings. Both approaches are valid and can be combined.

Texture Progression

Start with smooth purees. Over the next few months, progress to mashed foods with small lumps, then soft finger foods. By 9 to 10 months, most babies can handle soft pieces of food they pick up themselves. Staying on purees too long can delay oral motor development.

Allergen Introduction

Current guidelines recommend introducing common allergens early, around six months. Peanut (as thinned peanut butter), egg, dairy, wheat, and fish should all be introduced individually. Early exposure may reduce the risk of developing food allergies.

How Much

At six months, solid food is supplementary. Breast milk or formula remains the primary nutrition source until 12 months. Start with one to two tablespoons once or twice a day. Increase gradually based on the baby interest and appetite.

What to Avoid

Honey until 12 months (botulism risk). Whole nuts and hard raw vegetables (choking hazard). Added salt and sugar are unnecessary. Cow milk as a primary drink until 12 months. Small, hard, round foods like whole grapes and cherry tomatoes should be cut lengthwise.

Making It Enjoyable

Let the baby explore food at their own pace. Mess is part of learning. Do not force feed or pressure the baby to finish a portion. Offer a variety of flavors and textures early to develop a broad palate.
